A quick searing of beef with Mediterranean spices is the basis for making an easy Greek Gyro Sandwich. Serve it up with a tortilla, pita, or flatbread along with some side condiments, and you’re set with a tasty meal that’s different from the usual plan.
Seriously, so good with a few deep-fried chunks of crispy falafel, and I’m not afraid to admit that I cheat and buy it frozen. I’ve also bought the gyro meat frozen, and ever since I discovered Daphne’s Gyro Meat at Costco, I love pulling it out from the freezer and quickly cooking up a small quantity to fit into each sandwich.
But if you’re going for the homemade, get some stew meat and cut it into very small pieces. Itty bitty pieces that cook up in like 90 seconds. Season with (all dried spices from my pantry):
dill, onion flakes, garlic salt, smoked paprika, parsley, and salt.
Warm tortillas in a frying pan so they get soft and warm, with just a little color on them. I like using tortillas more than flatbread because they’re larger and more flexible, allowing you to get more toppings into the sandwich. Naan is also tasty, but when we get that, we tend to eat it more like a burrito bowl – a bite of meat, a scoop of vegetables, a piece of bread.
Mix up some dill-flavored sour cream (Greek yogurt would work, too) and add some of the same spices already used on the meat. Place a schmear of it on the bread of choice, plus chopped cucumber and tomato or Mediterranean Salad. Finish it off with some crispy greens, and that’s a good sandwich!
