Southern banana pudding is something new for my palate. While growing up, warm rice pudding was my mom’s go-to when we were sick. I have also been known to impulsively make homemade vanilla pudding on a cold winter night just for the comfort. Banana pudding wasn’t really on my radar, until I was introduced to the South.
It started with Southern hospitality from my daughter’s friend in South Carolina. We were fortunate to be invited to their barbecue of a smoked pig named Hogen Daz, who was the brother of Barbara-Q.
Authentic Southern dishes like macaroni and cheese, greens, and pickles rounded out this meal. It was topped off by Southern banana pudding.
(Thank you, Lisa!)
After that event, a Buc-ee’s opened near my home and my husband became instantly smitten. He brought me signature treats from Buc-ee’s one day, and I was hooked on the banana pudding. Chilled, fresh, with the perfect texture of crunchy cookies mixed with the sliced bananas and smooth pudding.
This rivals warm homemade pudding from scratch and that early childhood rice pudding comfort.
Upgrades are not necessary, although options could include:
- cook and serve pudding or a homemade variety
- whole milk
- fresh whipped cream
It’s really quite delicious with the no-frills method. I even use store brands when available.
